Dave Portnoy has taken aim at TMZ’s handling of the Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini story, questioning how the outlet even hesitated over publishing it.

The controversy has already generated significant attention, but the process behind how the story surfaced has now become a major talking point in its own right.

In particular, the internal deliberation at TMZ has raised eyebrows, especially given the outlet’s reputation for covering high-profile personal stories.

That is where Portnoy’s criticism comes in, shifting the focus away from the individuals involved and toward the media decisions behind the scenes.

TMZ reportedly debated publishing Vrabel-Russini photos

Details about how the story emerged were outlined in a report via Front Office Sports, shedding light on the unusual circumstances behind the images.

It was reported, “An anonymous tipster reached out to the outlet, saying that Vrabel was hanging out with an unidentified woman. When TMZ staffers evaluated the photos, they eventually realized that it was Russini.”

The report added: “The anonymous tipster was not from a known paparazzi or photo agency, and requested an unspecified sum in the ‘four figures.’

“As TMZ’s newsroom deliberated whether this was a legitimate story or too ‘bedroom police-y,’ the Post’s Page Six vertical ran with it, rendering the debate moot.”

The situation highlights how the images were circulated before publication, with multiple outlets reportedly approached and editorial concerns raised about whether the story crossed into overly intrusive territory.

Ultimately, the hesitation proved irrelevant once another outlet moved ahead, but it has since become a key part of the wider conversation.

Dave Portnoy calls TMZ’s hesitation ‘ridiculous’

Portnoy reacted to that aspect of the story in a post via his X handle, making it clear he found TMZ’s internal debate surprising.

He wrote, “Arguably the most ridiculous part of the Vrabel/Russini story is TMZ debating if the story was too scandalous for them. ‘Too bedroom police-y’ for TMZ.

“What does that even mean? Umm we’re talking about TMZ here.”

The comment reflects a broader view that TMZ, given its history, would not typically hesitate over a story of this nature, making the reported deliberation stand out even more.

For Portnoy, the issue is less about the content of the story and more about consistency in how such situations are handled across media platforms.
