Lucas Moura has expressed in a post for The Players’ Tribune his desires to win a trophy while in north London, sparking some Tottenham Hotspur fans to react on social media.
The Brazilian joined Spurs from Paris Saint-Germain in a last-ditch £23m transfer during the January 2018 window under Mauricio Pochettino. Lucas has since established himself as a key player at Tottenham, with 167 appearances so far across all competitions.
He also played a crucial role in Spurs’ reaching the 2018/19 Champions League final during the winger’s first full season. Scoring a hat-trick in their semi-final second-leg away to Ajax to win on away goals, completing a dramatic comeback after trailing 3-0 on aggregate.
Pochettino elected not to start Lucas in the Tottenham line-up to face Liverpool in Madrid for the Champions League final. The 29-year-old has only contested one final since, when Spurs lost in the Carabao Cup to Manchester City this April.
Spurs have additionally only reached the FA Cup semi-final once since the Brazilian’s arrival, coming in his debut campaign before fourth and two fifth-round exits. While falling out of the Champions League in the Last 16 in 2019/20 and the Europa League Last 16 in 20/21.
But Lucas, who has three-years remaining on his £80k-a-week contract, still has desires of winning a trophy with Tottenham. Noting: “My goal is to get back into the national team, because I’d love to play in the World Cup. Also, I really want to win a trophy with Spurs.
“That will be the next moment, I hope. But I realised long ago that these moments do not depend only on me. I’ll make sure to do my part, which is to pray, work hard and play as well as I can.”
