Nedum Onuoha has defended the suggestion that Eric Dier could leave Tottenham Hotspur for Bayern Munich.
HITC Football have been told that out-of-favour Tottenham Hotspur centre-back is in talks with the German giants about a possible January move.
Given that the 29-year-old has only played 198 minutes of Premier League football under Ange Postecoglou this term, and is even playing behind the likes of Emerson Royal and Ben Davies, then this possible move has surprised many.
Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha was keen to defend it all, even though ‘people think it’s a terrible move’ by claiming that it’s a ‘bargain’ in this inflated transfer market, as he told ESPN.
Thomas Tuchel would have seen a lot of Eric Dier during his time as Chelsea manager, so this isn’t something he is taking lightly.
One thing is for sure, the Englishman has a lot of experience and has played in the Champions League before with Tottenham.
Not only that, the £85k-a-week star will see a familiar face in Harry Kane if he decides to move to Munich and there seems to be a possibility it could happen.
Eric Dier to Bayern Munich
“Listen, I am not too hard on Dier,” said Onuoha. “For me, if he is going there as a back-up, then fair enough. I don’t know how this is going to work. I think Postecoglou has a particular style and he is looking for a certain type of player to play that style.
“As a consequence, there can be so many players who can fall as a manager because he just doesn’t see them as that. It doesn’t necessarily mean you are a bad player, you just don’t suit his eye.
“When we look at him going to Bayern now. There has to be something there because Kane’s played with him. Tuchel has seen him in the same league, so there is something there which he likes for Bayern Munich. I don’t think it raises their ceiling, but perhaps it raises their floor. Most of us don’t see him as being the difference-maker for Bayern Munich, but maybe because he doesn’t have to be.
“I get it. People think it’s a terrible move. I am just going to wait and see. I don’t think he is going to be a starter straight away. There must be a reason why Tuchel has decided he needs him now and he needs him in January, so I am not as down on it. I think he will offer something to Bayern because, otherwise, Tuchel could have stopped it. The owners could have stopped it like Palhinha. I am surprised it has happened. But, for that amount of money, it’s 2024, so that itself is a bargain.”

Eric Dier needs to move in January
Whether it’s Bayern or another team, Dier needs to look for a new home this month if he wants to pick up his career.
He could argue if he is playing on a regular basis, then he would be part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad because he has been before.
And with Euro 2024 around the corner, then surely that’s something Dier wants to be a part of and will need to be playing regularly to do so.
At Spurs, it seems as though nothing is going to change Postecoglou’s mind. Even with injuries, he is still selecting fullbacks ahead of Dier, so that says it all.
