Argentine media outlet Ole have heaped praise on Enzo Fernandez after the midfielder starred in his country’s World Cup semi-final win over Croatia – amid reports that Liverpool are ready to match any offers to sign the £103m talent.
Fernandez, 21, joined Benfica in the summer from River Plate and has gone from strength to strength in Portuguese football. Clocking up 24 games for Benfica, he has had a hand in eight goals from midfield – despite playing as a 6.
He came to the World Cup with just three Argentina caps – but he has taken that tally to nine. He has featured in every game for his country, coming on as a substitute against Saudi Arabia and Mexico. Fernandez has started the next four.
Scoring against Mexico as a sub, he got an assist against Poland. On Tuesday night, Fernandez sparkled in the middle of the park against Croatia. Ole handed Fernandez a rating of 9/10, his display a “masterpiece” and he “never tires”.
“Another huge match for Enzo. Always decisive.A mid-distance shot from him, was our first sign of danger. But his masterpiece was that masterful pass to Julián Alvarez, which led to the penalty. 1-0. He became Messi’s partner to play.
“An octopus to cut, distribute, push, he never tires. He arrived and was close to scoring what would have been 3-0. Every day he plays better,” Argentine outlet Ole reported in a player ratings piece, following the 3-0 semi-final win.

His incredible form on the biggest stage has alerted Liverpool. Amid many reports, this week, Portuguese site O Jogo claim that Liverpool have informed Benfica they will match any offer for Fernandez. He has a £103million exit clause.
In terms of what Liverpool need, he answers the question. The Reds midfield requires box-to-box players with huge energy, ability to affect the game in attack and defence. Jordan Henderson and Thiago are in their thirties, now.
