Jose Mourinho has reportedly told incoming AS Roma signing Andrea Belotti that he tried to bring the Italian international to Tottenham during the Portuguese manager’s time in north London.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, discussions between Mourinho and Belotti this weekend revealed that the three-time Premier League winner tried to lure the-then Torino captain to Spurs, however, no move ever materialised as the striker remained in Turin and ran out his contract with the Serie A side, which expired this summer.

Tottenham have been one of the many sides linked with Belotti in recent months, with Antonio Conte even reportedly trying to sign the attacker for the north London side in January, however, it is Roma who have won the race for the Italian talisman.

With 158 goals for Torino, Belotti has been one of Serie A’s premier centre-forwards in the past few years, yet despite huge interest from Premier League and La Liga clubs as per Gazzetta dello Sport, staying in Italy was always a priority for the striker, and Roma are seemingly a perfect fit for the 28-year-old.

With the Giallorossi signing Paulo Dybala already this summer and working on another deal to sign Georginio Wijnaldum, Roma are building quite the squad ahead of the new season, with Belotti hitting the prime of his career and likely to partner Tammy Abraham in a new-look frontline.

Indeed, Mourinho is clearly a big fan of Belotti, and the fact the former Spurs boss tried to sign him for Tottenham shows just how much the Portuguese manager is eager to work with the Italian, who could become a sensation in the Eternal City after signing for Roma.

Off the back of European success and an incredible window that has seen Dybala arrive, Roma could be ready to challenge for the Serie A title with Belotti also at the club, and whilst Mourinho missed out on coaching the striker during his Tottenham years, the Portuguese manager has finally got his man ahead of what could be an incredible year for the Giallorossi.
