Danny Murphy has heaped praise on Tottenham transfer target, Pau Torres, by claiming that the Villarreal star has a ‘more physical presence’ than Lisandro Martinez, as he told talkSPORT.

The defensive duo are attracting a lot of interest from teams in the Premier League, with Torres’ name linked with Tottenham and Arsenal and Manchester United battling it out for Martinez, although it seems as though the latter have won the race for the Ajax man, as reported by Sky Sports.

Spurs have already dipped into the La Liga market this summer and added a centre-back to their books following the loan signing of Clement Lenglet from Barcelona.

But it seems as though Antonio Conte, who has been backed pretty well by those in the Spurs boardroom, is keen on bringing in more defensive quality, as Murphy was asked who he prefers between Torres and Martinez.

“I have seen more of Pau Torres and I like him,” said Murphy. “He’s a very good footballing centre-half. Strong and he has been playing for Villarreal at a high level.

“He plays for his country. He has more physical presence than Martinez.”

TOTTENHAM’S DEFENCE THEIR WEAKNESS?

Even though Conte is a defensive-minded coach, could it be argued that Tottenham’s defence is their weakness heading into next season?

From an attacking perspective, they have some of the best forwards in the Premier League, including Golden Boot winner, Heung-min Son.

But with Lenglet added to Conte’s squad, as well as Yves Bissouma and talk of Djed Spence edging closer to a transfer, then that indicates where most of the work has needed to be done.

Either way, if Spurs can add Torres to their ranks from Villarreal, then it would be one of the purchases of the summer from the north London club.
