According to journalist Fabio Santini, as quoted by Area Napoli, Tottenham are the closest club to signing Lorenzo Insigne in January.
It has previously been reported that Spurs are keen on Insigne, and now, the London club are reportedly leading the race for the Napoli attacker.
This is a player that Conte knows very well having worked with him when he was the manager of Italy’s national team, but things weren’t always plain sailing between the pair.
Indeed, Insigne and Conte seemingly fell out back in 2015 after he pulled out of a training camp with Italy, but the pair were quick to bury the hatchet, with Insigne speaking about the incident after a goalscoring performance against Spain in 2016.
What’s Insigne said about Conte?
Insigne stated that he and Conte had a bit of a misunderstanding over the incident, but the pair sorted things shortly afterwards.
“It was a great evening, a pity about the result,” Insigne told Rai Sport (via FourFourTwo).
“I care about the shirt. With the coach, it’s in the past, it was just a misunderstanding but we have clarified things.
“I have always said I am very proud to represent Italy and I will always give everything for Italy.
“If we continue working together like this and follow the coach’s instructions, whoever is selected for the Euros can try to go all the way.”

Great signing
Insigne would be a fantastic signing for Spurs, and while he and Conte had a bit of an issue at one point, he’s clearly a player the gaffer likes.
Indeed, it’s been reported that Conte and Fabio Paratici are both big fans of the winger, and it’s not hard to understand why.
Insigne is an incredibly talented footballer. He hit 19 goals in Serie A last season, and he’s been performing at the top level for the best part of a decade now.
This would be a brilliant acquisition for Tottenham.
