The Minnesota Timberwolves could be looking to add another star this summer after a season that highlighted the need for more help around Anthony Edwards.

The Wolves had a solid year overall, but fell short of expectations, losing to the San Antonio Spurs in the second round after back-to-back trips to the Western Conference Finals.

With roster injuries piling up late in the season, Tim Connelly appears to be exploring ways to find Edwards a more reliable scoring partner.

Kyrie Irving and Ja Morant linked to the Minnesota Timberwolves

According to The Athletic, Minnesota has already shown interest in a number of high-profile players.

“Few decision makers around the NBA have been as aggressive as Wolves president Tim Connelly, whose team went to back-to-back conference finals before falling to San Antonio in the second round of this season’s playoffs,” the report said. “Along the way, Connelly pursued stars like Kevin Durant and Antetokounmpo (at the February trade deadline) while showing some level of interest in others like Kyrie Irving and Ja Morant, but has yet to land a high-profile running mate for Anthony Edwards.”

The need for more firepower was clear during the playoffs. Donte DiVincenzo suffered an Achilles tear, while Edwards played through a knee issue, both of which stretched the Wolves’ depth.

Minnesota Timberwolves need more offense around Edwards

Julius Randle provided steady production, but the Wolves still appeared too reliant on Edwards to generate quality looks in the half-court.

The defensive foundation remains strong. Rudy Gobert continues to anchor the middle, and Jaden McDaniels is one of the league’s better wing defenders.

Minnesota does not need to overhaul its identity. What they lack is a second offensive star who can create before Edwards has to take over.

Ja Morant looks more realistic than Kyrie Irving

Irving is the more natural fit when healthy. Though he missed the entire 2025-26 season recovering from ACL surgery, his shot creation would fill a clear need.

The issue is availability. Dallas Mavericks president Masai Ujiri and GM Mike Schmitz seem committed to seeing how Irving fits alongside Cooper Flagg, making a trade unlikely for now.

Morant, on the other hand, might be more attainable. He averaged 19.5 points and 8.1 assists in 20 games last season, and Memphis has moved further into a rebuild since trading Jaren Jackson Jr. to Utah.

If the Grizzlies are ready to move on, Minnesota should be among the first teams to make an offer.
