As you may have heard, Liverpool are said to be interested in luring Marco Asensio away from Real Madrid, with the Spain international set to become a free agent in 2023.

The Reds are no strangers to seizing a market opportunity such as this. Brendan Rodgers acted swiftly back in 2015 to sign James Milner on a free transfer, before Jürgen Klopp did likewise when securing Joel Matip.

Now, the German could make his best free transfer since capturing the Cameroonian back in 2016.

What’s the story?

Well, Klopp is said to be personally invested in bringing Asensio to Anfield.

If it happens, it has the potential to be Liverpool’s best bit of business under the 55-year-old.

At the age of just 26, Asensio has won the Champions League on three occasions – scoring in the 2017 final against Juventus – while also lifting many more pieces of silverware, including three La Liga titles.

The Real Madrid No.11 has also earned 29 caps for Spain.

In regards to the Milner comparison in our title, that is because Asensio can cover a range of different positions, just like the 36-year-old has done since swapping Manchester City for Liverpool.

Last season, the Spaniard appeared on the right of Carlo Ancelotti’s frontline, as well as on the left and in the centre.

Asensio still managed to produce results despite often changing his position, scoring 12 goals in all competitions to be named third-top scorer behind Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior.

Liverpool need Marco Asensio

As things stand, Asensio seems highly unlikely to sign a new contract with Real Madrid.

Therefore, Liverpool must attempt to wrap up an agreement soon, as the opportunity is too good for Klopp to miss out on.

While there has been talk of a big-money move for Jude Bellingham, Asensio would provide the Reds with star-studded squad depth in midfield, and also wouldn’t cost a penny in terms of transfer fees.

Liverpool are no strangers to capitalising on free agents, and if this move materialises, it would be the best bargain addition made since the arrivals of Milner and Matip.
