Mikel Merino’s broken foot has forced Arsenal into late deliberations as the January transfer window approaches its deadline.

The injury leaves Mikel Arteta short of midfield options at a crucial stage of the season, with fixtures continuing to pile up.

Arsenal must now decide whether to act in the market or rely on solutions already inside the club.

Arsenal consider midfield cover after Merino blow

Mikel Merino’s absence has disrupted Arsenal’s midfield balance at a time when squad depth is being tested.

According to The Independent, Arsenal are weighing their options just hours before the deadline to see if they can replace Merino.

“Arsenal are looking into an option to replace Mikel Merino following his broken foot injury before the end of the transfer window.”

The update suggests discussions have taken place, even though no final decision has yet been reached.

Max Dowman emerges as internal option

Rather than pursuing a late signing, Arsenal appear increasingly open to promoting from within.

The club believe Max Dowman could step into the role, while acknowledging that the 16-year-old will need to be carefully managed.

However, it is far more likely that the club decide against signing a direct replacement for the midfielder as there is an anticipation that Max Dowman could step into the role.”

“The club realise that Dowman needs to be managed as he is only 16 years old, but he looks ready to make an impact from previous appearances.”

Despite his age, Dowman’s previous appearances have convinced staff that he is capable of making an immediate impact.
