Liverpool fans were up in arms at the end of the summer transfer window over their club’s failure to sign a new attacker, but it seems as though they needn’t have worried.

Indeed, heading into the second international break, the Reds remain the only unbeaten team in the Premier League and their frontline is looking more frightening than ever.

Mohamed Salah looks to have hit new heights, Sadio Mane is back to his best, while Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino have both played their parts to perfection.

To make things that much sweeter, Liverpool’s reported summer attacking targets aren’t exactly flourishing either.

Patson Daka is yet to score a goal in the Premier League since joining Leicester City, but perhaps the luckiest escape Liverpool had was with Donyell Malen.

Indeed, while Liverpool didn’t sign Malen despite strong links, he did eventually get his move to one of Europe’s elite clubs, joining Borussia Dortmund, but it’s fair to say he’s not having the best of times in Germany.

Seven appearances, zero goals and zero assists tells you all you need to know about his start to life in the Bundesliga. The Dutchman is struggling and it’s hard to imagine he’d have fared any better in the Premier League.

Yes, Malen looked a talent at PSV and he has some incredible physical attributes, being described as ‘very fast’ in the past, but Europe’s top leagues are often a different animal.

Look at how many Eredivisie stars struggle upon moving to England, Alfonso Alves, Memphis Depay and Alireza Jahanbakhsh are just a few and it seems as though Malen would have followed in their footsteps if he’d joined Liverpool.

Malen could still come good eventually, but with Liverpool’s front-line firing on all cylinders at the start of this season, it looks as though Michael Edwards have made another great decision in not signing the youngster.
