Paul Merson said on Sky Sports News (2:59pm, March 6, 2021) that reported Manchester City target Danny Ings was unlucky at Liverpool.

The former Arsenal star, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, believes that the Southampton striker can play for a lot of clubs.

Merson believes that the England international was unlucky at Liverpool, and has said that he is a special player.

The Athletic reported in February that City are interested in signing Ings from Southampton in the summer of 2021.

Merson said about Ings on Sky Sports News (2:59pm, March 6, 2021): “I thought he was bang unlucky at Liverpool. He had injuries. I think he is a special player. He can play for a lot of clubs, there’s no doubt about that.”

From Liverpool to Manchester City via Southampton?

Ings had serious injury problems during his time at Liverpool and spent a long time on the sidelines.

Competition for places in manager Jurgen Klopp’s attack saw his playing time restricted when he recovered, but he is now playing regularly (when fit) and is banging in the goals for fun.

According to WhoScored, the 28-year-old scored 22 goals and provided two assists in the Premier League last season, and so far this campaign, he has scored eight goals and has given three assists in the league.

With Sergio Aguero having injury problems and now in his 30s, there is no surprise that City are reportedly looking at Ings.

Given the striker’s experience of playing for a big club such as Liverpool, he would not be fazed at the prospect of leading the line for City next season and beyond.
