It’s easy to forget that Mat Ryan played for Arsenal this year. But since returning to Spain, the shot-stopper has flourished for Real Sociedad, who this weekend took on Athletic Bilbao.
The Basque derby is one of Spain’s great football rivalries. And there was an extra layer of drama for the first encounter this season with Sociedad heading into the fixture joint-top of the La Liga table.
The San Sebastian-based club have been excellent this season. And the form of Ryan has been key part for Sociedad’s incredible start to the campaign, with Bilbao not too far behind their Basque rivals in seventh place.
Ryan joined Arsenal on loan for the second half of last season, and despite playing just a handful of games for the Gunners, the former Brighton star quickly became a fan favourite.
With Bernd Leno out of form, Ryan was a safe pair of hands for the north London side. And his admiration for the club made him a quick favourite amongst supporters at the Emirates Stadium.
And since moving to Sociedad following the clash against Bilbao, the keeper has returned to his best. With Ryan one of La Liga’s top-performing players in the position.
