Tottenham Hotspur fans are starting to think that Jose Mourinho might have been right about Eric Dier all along now.

Manager’s favourite

Dier was one of Mourinho’s favourites during his time at the club, with the Portuguese boss always sticking by the 27-year-old.

He signed a new long-term deal when Mourinho was in charge and was basically a permanent feature under the old Tottenham boss.

Since Conte has come in Dier has been similarly influential.

He has been a mainstay in the heart of Spurs’ three-man defence, and his performances have really caught the eye.

Dier has arguably been Tottenham’s most consistent player this term, which is quite the turnaround.

Under Mourinho, the England international didn’t always seem the most convincing at the back.

Despite having his manager’s backing, it’s fair to say that not every Tottenham fan felt he was of the quality required to start regularly in central defence for them.

But he has been transformed under Conte, with Dier now one of the most in-form defenders in the entirety of the Premier League.

And Conte’s comments certainly were eye-catching.

“I think that Eric Dier can become one of the best players in the world in that position,” he said.

“I think he has great space for improvement and we are talking about a really good player, strong physically, with a good personality. Good technically because he was before a midfielder. This role is perfect for him and he has to continue this way because in this role he can become one of the best central defenders.”

Tottenham fans certainly are now coming round to the opinion that Dier may well have the talent to be a real asset to them.

He is rapidly changing opinions at Spurs, with many supporters starting to back Conte’s statement about him.

Transfer plans changing?

Given Conte’s words it may be that Tottenham don’t chase quite as many defensive recruits as first though.

When Conte first came in there were suggestions that he was looking to sign two central defenders.

But with Dier and Cristian Romero already at the club, it may be that only a left-sided centre-back is deemed to be a priority.
