Arsenal fans have reacted on Twitter to Mikel Arteta listing Calum Chambers as one of his right-backs and claiming that he has ‘different qualities’ to pick from.
It’s clear that the right side of the defence is an area of concern for Arteta, and it has been for some while now, so it’s not like this is a last-minute problem that needs to be dealt with.
There have been suggestions that Hector Bellerin will leave, but at this moment in time, he remains, which doesn’t help Arsenal’s cause.
Whilst Cedric, another natural player for that spot, was brought in as a free transfer and is producing performances like he was brought in for nothing.
Then there’s Chambers, who has played at right-back this season and is clearly is more suited to centre-back.
This is what Arteta told Football London about the right fullback area:
“Well, we have different options, different qualities with Hector, with Cedric, with Calum, with Ainsley,” said Arteta.
“We had a lot of issues through the season. They have missed training sessions from COVID, they got injured, some of them haven’t featured.
“We’re still looking depending on the opponent and the form of each player what we’re gonna do there.”
Arsenal fans are now concerned that their club will proceed to use Chambers as a right-back going forward.
Added with that, some of them are then worried that they won’t dip into the market to buy someone.
There are only days remaining before the summer transfer window slams shut, and it seems as though those in the Emirates boardroom are going to leave a gaping problem on one side of their team.
It’s been clear for some while that Arsenal needs investment in that area, but if they can’t sell players and get them off the wage bill then they are in all sorts of bother.
And it’s the Arsenal faithful who are going to suffer, not forgetting Arteta’s job being on the line.
