Newcastle United are flying high in the Premier League right now, but they’re not having the best of luck in the transfer window at the moment.

They’ve already missed out on Andrey Santos to Chelsea this month, despite Graeme Bailey claiming that the Magpies thought they had secured his signing, Ivan Fresneda is now on Arsenal’s radar after being strongly linked to the Tyneside club, and now, it looks like they’ve missed out on another talented youngster.

Indeed, Maximo Perrone is reportedly set to join Manchester City according to Fabrizio Romano who has all-but confirmed the deal with his patented ‘here we go’ tweet.

This one has to sting for Newcastle.

The Magpies have been keen on Perrone for the longest time, but, once again, they’ve failed to conclude a deal for a talented South American midfielder.

It’s frustrating for the Magpies because they clearly have a focus on this area of recruitment, having targeted both Andrey Santos and Perrone this month, but they keep on missing out.

It’s even more annoying when you consider that the man driving these moves is Dan Ashworth – the Sporting Director who discovered both Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister at Brighton.

Newcastle could be missing out on some future superstars here, but the sad reality is that Eddie Howe’s side don’t quite have the pulling power of a team like Chelsea or Manchester City at this moment in time.

Of course, that is likely to change as Newcastle continue to establish themselves as one of the Premier League’s elite clubs, but the damage has already been done to some extent as Perrone and Andrey have headed elsewhere.

Newcastle may well live to regret not signing this young man in years to come.
