He’s attracting interest from some of world’s biggest clubs but Tottenham Hotspur were once named one of favourites to sign Italy star Marco Verratti.

For consecutive seasons Tottenham were installed as favourites to make the brilliant Paris Saint Germain midfielder one of the stellar signings deemed necessary to elevate the North Londoners into genuine title challengers, as previously reported by HITC.com.

Spurs failed to make good on the reported interest, though, and have been found wanting when it comes to keeping pace at the top end of the Premier League.

Mauricio Pochettino has made Tottenham into one of the most exciting young teams in Europe, though, and with the big stadium move this summer coupled with continued participation in the Champions League they will be an attractive proposition for potential signings.

And Pochettino has been given fresh hope of finally landing Verratti and reuniting him with former PSG teammates Serge Aurier and Lucas Moura if reports from France are anything to go by.

According to French sports radio station RMC, the 25-year-old has been told he will have to fight for his place in the starting XI next season, with the club deciding that he has been given ‘far too easy a ride in the last two years’.

Verratti was sent off against Real Madrid in the Champions League which RMC claim angered PSG’s hierarchy who ‘have decided to give him less privileges in the coming campaign’.

That coincides with the reported arrival of new boss Thomas Tuchel as a replacement for the out of contract Unai Emery.

Verratti would likely cost Spurs a club record fee but Daniel Levy and the owners will want to add some star quality to the squad not only to help Spurs on the pitch but also make a statement as the club moves into its new 62,000 seater home.

Verratti’s wages may be a stumbling block for Spurs unless the club is willing to remove its salary ceiling.

Any move would also raise question marks over the future of Christian Eriksen, who has been linked the likes of Barcelona, as reported by talkSPORT.
