Christian Pulisic became a concern for the USMNT after their 4-1 World Cup win over Paraguay last week. The forward reportedly aggravated a calf issue and trained apart from the main group during the build-up to Australia.
That was a problem because the 27-year-old had still been important in the opener, even while limited. Mauricio Pochettino’s side looked evolved collectively, but losing their most important winger was always going to change the plan.
And now, with Pochettino confirming the AC Milan star is ruled out, his replacement may catch some fans off guard.
Mauricio Pochettino turns to Ricardo Pepi during Christian Pulisic absence

Speaking to FOX Sports, Pochettino revealed that Pulisic would not feature and that Pepi is going to take his place in the starting XI against Australia.
The decision raises eyebrows, as Pepi is a centre-forward rather than a natural wide player. The USMNT had other options for the left side, including Gio Reyna and Tim Weah.
Beyond that, when Pulisic was substituted against Paraguay, it was Sebastian Berhalter who came on. Therefore, bringing in Pepi suggests a shift in approach rather than a like-for-like swap.
It may also mean a change in shape, with Weston McKennie potentially asked to adjust his role.
Christian Pulisic’s absence is a major USMNT blow
Pulisic’s influence was clear before the injury concern grew.
He registered an assist, two key passes and made four successful dribbles before being taken off at halftime against Paraguay.
His creativity and leadership will be missed, as he remains the team’s most reliable link between midfield and attack.
Pepi, though, offers a different kind of threat. He is coming off a 19-goal club season and could provide Folarin Balogun with valuable support in the box.
