Mauricio Pochettino has proven evasive when pressed on whether he plans to extend his time as the USMNT’s head coach following their World Cup exit.
The Argentine was appointed as Gregg Berhalter’s full-time successor in September 2024 and initially struggled to convince.

Disappointments in the CONCACAF Nations League and the Gold Cup meant that not many were optimistic about his team’s chances heading into this summer’s tournament.
Still, and while the USMNT’s World Cup campaign did end in disappointment following a heavy 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the last 16, Pochettino’s team did play well until that point.
It remains to be seen, however, if his tenure will continue.
Pochettino says he’s considering offer to extend USMNT contract
There was certainly enough there to suggest that this team could get better under his watch, even despite the rather tame nature of their elimination in Seattle.
Indeed, The United States Soccer Federation want Pochettino to extend his contract, which is set to run out soon.
When asked by Spanish outlet Cope about his future, the 54-year-old confirmed he had been offered new terms. He, however, added that he will not make an immediate decision.

Pochettino confirmed there will be an update on his future “in the coming weeks.”
The two parties have reportedly held positive talks about an extension, which could see him lead the USMNT into the 2030 World Cup.
The 2028 Olympics are being held in Los Angeles, while the Copa America that year could reportedly be held in the United States too.
Some USMNT fans would like Nashville SC head coach BJ Callaghan to replace Pochettino if he were to leave, although nothing has yet been confirmed.
Pochettino had been heavily linked with Italian giants AC Milan but they have since appointed former Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim to lead them into next season and beyond.
