Sean Longstaff has put pen to paper on a new contract at Newcastle until the summer of 2023 – and plenty have responded, including Matt Targett and Isaac Hayden. The midfielder was out of contract on Tyneside in June.

Longstaff, 24, has been a rotational option for Newcastle this season – playing 26 times for his boyhood club. The Toon academy product only started 15 of his side’s 38 league games, with his long-term future in doubt.

The uncapped Englishman has had plenty of competition in the middle, especially in the second half of the season. The positional change of Joelinton, and Bruno Guimaraes, has pushed him down the pecking order.

With his contract due to expire, there was doubt that Longstaff would actually remain. But the Toon have decided to hand the midfielder a new contract until the summer of 2025, confirming as much on Instagram.

Hayden and Targett respond as Longstaff pens Newcastle contract

It is probably the right move from Newcastle. Longstaff would have been given the facts, and the fact is, that he will not be first choice come the start of next season. But he will be in and out of the side under Eddie Howe.

For Newcastle, it is an important move. With the club expected to bring in new signings, perhaps foreign players, keeping a homegrown talent helps registration rules. Of course, Longstaff could leave before June 2025.

Targett, who is yet to complete a permanent move after his loan at Newcastle, and Hayden – who also sees his future in doubt – reacted.
