Jacob Murphy has urged Matt Targett to sign a contract with Newcastle United, after his successful loan spell from Aston Villa.
The left-back posted on Instagram ‘what a few months we have had’, as Newcastle rounded off the season with a win at Burnley on Sunday.
Targett moved to St James’ Park on-loan during the January transfer window and will return to Villa colours in the summer.
But it seems as though his £12 million teammate (Sky Sports) up in the north wants him to stay, as Murphy posted in the comments section ‘Love it you. Sign the ting’.
Nonetheless, this was the message Targett posted to fans, after the 2021/22 Premier League campaign came to an end.
Steven Gerrard added Lucas Digne to his ranks in January, which pushed Targett behind the Frenchman at Villa Park.
That’s what led the Englishman to move to St James’ Park and it will be interesting if they knock for his services, for good, when the transfer window re-opens.
The issue for Targett is that Digne is Gerrard’s signing, and given the player’s form, he’s not pushing ahead of him anytime soon.
From a squad depth perspective, it’s great news for Villa because they have two top-quality players to pick from at left-back.
But will Targett want to play second fiddle to Digne? Perhaps not, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if he does leave.
