When Nuno Espirito Santo was named as the new Tottenham manager, no player had more reason to be excited than Matt Doherty.
Indeed, Doherty would be reuniting with a manager who had him playing his best football at Wolves, a manager who trusts him and a manager who plays a system he’s very familiar with.
After a rocky first season in north London, it looked as though Doherty would get a chance to prove himself worthy of playing for a club like Tottenham Hotspur.
However, if recent reports are to be believed, Spurs may have another wing-back in mind next season.

Indeed, according to Duncan Castles, Spurs are interested in Porto’s Jesus Corona, and if Nuno is to play his patented 3-4-3 this term, then Corona would likely slot into Doherty’s role at wing-back.
If you’re Doherty in this situation you have to be asking a few questions.
The Irishman has proven time and time again that he’s perfect for Nuno’s system. After all, he earned the £15m move to north London off the back of his performances for Wolves under Nuno, and yet, it seems as though Tottenham are looking for another option there.
Of course, no player is a guaranteed starter, but with Doherty seemingly being ready-made for the new regime under the new manager, he has every reason to be angry if Spurs opt to bring Corona to the club.
It will be interesting to see what happens to Doherty if the Mexican comes in, but Spurs potentially splashing out on a new player in his position doesn’t bode well for him at all.
