The Telegraph journalist, Jeremy Wilson has reported that talks between Southampton and former Leeds United boss, Jesse Marsch have broken down, who was in line to replace Nathan Jones.

After the 49-year-old was sacked at Elland Road, it seemed as if the Saints were ready to hand him in the reins, with pundit Charlie Davies even backing him to become a ‘legend’ at the club.

However, it seems as if talks between Southampton and Jesse Marsch to come in as the long-term successor to Nathan Jones have seemingly not worked out.

Talks between Southampton & Nathan Jones replacement, Marsch are off

Things have gone from bad to worse for the club in the South Coast of England, as they deemed it the right call to not just sack Ralph Hassenhuttl but also the recently-fired Welshman.

While it seemed like Jesse Marsch was finally ready to take over the helm from Nathan Jones, the Telegraph’s Jeremy Wilson updated that talks have broken down, with the club ‘not keen’ on handing him a long-term contract.

With the 20th placed side currently braced for relegation, their primary aim would understandably be staying in the Premier League instead of looking at the bigger picture.

Furthermore, it has been mentioned that caretaker manager, Ruben Selles will keep his job against Chelsea, and is also seen as a long-term option accompanied by a more seasoned coach.

Big blow for Jesse Marsch

Considering Jesse Marsch would be one of the select few managers to be up for replacing Nathan Jones in the mess that is Southampton at the minute, the fact that talks have not progressed smoothly must be devastating for him.

After being given the marching orders from his job at Leeds as well, it has well and truly been a difficult few weeks for the coach once described as a ‘really good man-manager’ by Chris Sutton.
