Spurs failed to earn three crucial points against PSV.
Mark Clattenburg will have frustrated Tottenham Hotspur fans in his Daily Mail column by claiming that Spurs were denied a perfectly legitimate goal through Davinson Sanchez against PSV Eindhoven.
The Colombian defender looked to have scored in the first half as a corner fell to the former Ajax star, who slid the ball home into the back of the net. But the linesman adjudged Harry Kane to have become active on the goal line.
Kane did not touch the ball and Spurs pegged back PSV soon after, with Lucas Moura turning in Kieran Trippier’s cross after Hirving Lozano gave PSV the lead. Kane put Spurs in front, but Hugo Lloris then received a red card.
Former Premier League referee Clattenburg believes Lloris deserved his red from Slavko Vincic, unlike Spurs legend Chris Waddle, which played a big part in Spurs conceding late on with Luuk de Jong flicking the ball into the net.
“They were denied a perfectly good goal in the first half when Sanchez’s strike was chalked off for offside,” Clattenburg said. “While Kane was standing in an offside position when Sanchez took the shot, he was not interfering with play.
“Standing on the goal-line, he was not in the goalkeeper’s line of vision and did not impact on his ability to make a save. Hugo Lloris was correctly sent off. He was reckless and denied a clear and obvious goal-scoring opportunity.”
The draw in Holland leaves Spurs in a very difficult position in Group B of the Champions League. They must now win their remaining three games to have any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.
Barcelona sit top with nine points, while Inter are in second on six and PSV on one. Finishing third in the group means Europa League qualification, but the jury remains out on whether that is beneficial or detrimental.
Spurs are next in action at Wembley against Premier League champions Manchester City on Monday night.
