SNL standout Marcello Hernandez was tasked with hosting the ESPYs, and his opening monologue set the tone, as he took swipes at several stars, including Tiger Woods.
Hernandez has been one of the bright young stars on SNL for the last few years, and is also a huge sports fan. So, his being asked to host the ESPYs should come as no surprise.
However, what did come as a surprise was his joke aimed at Tiger Woods, which came as he was praising Chicago Bears’ young quarterback, Caleb Williams.

Marcello Hernandez jokes Tiger Woods will be on the cover of Grand Theft Auto VI
During his opening monologue at the 2026 ESPY awards, Marcello Hernandez took time to send some jokes in the direction of several athletes.
In what initially appeared to be a moment of sincere praise for Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, Hernandez turned it into a brutal dig at Tiger Woods.
“I want to congratulate Caleb Williams, the quarterback for the Chicago Bears, who will be on the cover of the new ‘Madden’ video game…
“And Tiger Woods will be on the cover of ‘Grand Theft Auto.’ I love you, Tiger. I’m a big fan, man. It’s just that it was written so well.”
Hernandez did seemingly apologize for the comment, but noted that he thought the joke was written so well that he had to deliver it.
Tiger Woods focused on physical and mental recovery
The comment seemed to have been referencing Woods’ recent troubles away from the golf course. But Woods has mostly been focused on his recovery over the last year.
It was announced that Woods was going to be stepping away from professional golf for the time being, as he prioritized his physical and mental health.
While he might be one of golf’s biggest stars today, the legendary figure has had some personal struggles that he has now decided to prioritize addressing.
Hernandez’s comments can be considered below the belt, given the serious nature of Woods’ struggles, but the priority for Tiger is to get better.
