Ajax director of football Marc Overmars has suggested that a return to Arsenal – or even Barcelona – would be ‘interesting’.

Overmars will be a man in demand having impressed in charge of Ajax.

The Dutchman has now commented on his future, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo. Overmars admitted that both Arsenal and Barcelona are ‘interesting’ options for him.

Overmars claims to have rejected six offers in the past. Now, he thinks his family would like a return to Spain – and ideally Barcelona.

“At a certain point the thing is simple: either I continue and I stay here in Ajax or we go abroad again as a family. I have let that train pass six times,” said Overmars. “They are both interesting. I think my family would choose Spain. And I think they would also choose Barcelona,” he added.

Overmars has history with Arsenal

Overmars signed for Arsenal way back in 1997. His pace made him an integral part of Arsene Wenger’s side, boasting an impressive record.

In 141 games for Arsenal, Overmars hit 41 goals. Overmars also clinched the Premier League title and FA Cup in an Arsenal shirt.

In July 2000, Arsenal sold Overmars to Barcelona. In 2008, Overmars was voted the Gunners’ 12th greatest player of all time, so fans would surely love to see him return.

Edu finds himself under pressure as Arsenal’s technical director. If the Brazilian was to lose his job, many fans would back Overmars as the ideal replacement.

Overmars’ record at Ajax

Overmars became director of football at Ajax in 2012. Under his reign, Ajax have signed and sold the likes of Arkadiusz Milik, Kasper Dolberg, Hakim Ziyech and Davinson Sanchez.

Overmars has also utilised the South American market to sign David Neres, Antony and Nicolas Tagliafico.

Homegrown players like Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt and Donny van de Beek also emerged in Overmars’ reign.

It’s easy to see why Arsenal would want Overmars, but beating Barcelona to him may be difficult.
