Arsenal also expressed a desire to sign the 21-year-old before they got their hands on Oleksandr Zinchenko, with RSC Anderlecht requesting £11m for their Spain Under-21 international.
Now, Marsch and Erik ten Hag will have to look elsewhere.

Leeds have also suffered a blow as the left-back moves to the Etihad Stadium to replace Zinchenko.
The Citizens have wrapped up an £11m deal for the Badalona-born technician, after he enjoyed a remarkable campaign in Belgium last season.
Gomez scored seven goals in 49 appearances, while also impressively recording 15 assists for the Belgian giants.
It is no wonder Pep Guardiola is so keen to work with the Barcelona academy graduate, who can also play in midfield like Zinchenko was able to at the Etihad Stadium.
Leeds have alternatives to Manchester United target
We’re not quite sure who else Ten Hag will pursue as he looks to strengthen his left-back department, but it seems as if Leeds have already moved on.
In truth, Gomez may have been wanted as an addition for midfield, as the Red Devils have already signed Tyrell Malacia for the left-back area.
The Whites are said to be interested in Philadelphia Union defender Kai Wagner, who has been described as one of the most technical players in the United States.
The German-born left-back has also outdone Xherdan Shaqiri for assists over in Major League Soccer, so he clearly has talent on par with Premier League proven creators.
