Spanish newspaper AS report that United have made a first move for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvilli.
It’s stated that United have called Mamardashvili’s representatives to explore a potential summer transfer.
Valencia want to give Mamardashvili a new contract and increase his release clause which currently stands at €20million (£17million).
Negotiations are going well but United have registered their interest and that could yet turn Mamardashvili’s head.
The Georgian stopper, 21, has emerged as a first-team star for Valencia this season having arrived from Dinamo Tbilisi last summer.
United seemingly see huge potential in Mamardashvili and could now utilise him as David De Gea’s backup and eventual successor.
This may work well for Newcastle United, who are keen on United’s current second-choice Dean Henderson.
The Manchester Evening News reported last week that Newcastle were close to signing Henderson.
It was alleged that the United stopper had travelled to Tyneside for talks ahead of joining the Magpies this summer.
Henderson needs first-team football after failing to play a single minute of Premier League action this season.
United making a move for Mamardashvili would surely be an indication that Henderson is on his way out this summer.
Mamardashvili’s youth and potential may even mean that Henderson is moved on permanently this summer, with Newcastle clearly leading the race.
