Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has offered his perspective on the United Kingdom’s political landscape.
The INEOS founder, who took a minority stake in the Premier League club and now oversees football operations at Old Trafford, was asked about the possibility of Nigel Farage one day becoming prime minister.
While Farage currently leads Reform UK and Keir Starmer heads the Labour Party, Ratcliffe’s response focused on leadership qualities rather than party allegiance.
His comments have since generated discussion beyond both politics and football.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe gives view on Nigel Farage’s prime minister potential
Ratcliffe was asked about Nigel Farage’s potential path to becoming prime minister. He framed his answer around personality traits rather than party politics.

“I think Nigel is an intelligent man, and I think he has good intentions,” he told Sky News. “But, in a way, you could say exactly the same about Keir when he came in.”
Ratcliffe then spoke about the qualities he believes are required to govern during challenging periods.
“I think it needs somebody who’s prepared to be unpopular for a period of time to get the big issues sorted out. That would be my view.”

The Manchester United co-owner also addressed the job Keir Starmer is doing as prime minister.
He suggested that structural challenges may play a role in the difficulty of governing the country.
“I don’t know whether it’s just the apparatus that hasn’t allowed Keir to do it, or maybe he’s too nice. I know Keir, and he’s a nice man. I like him, but it’s a tough job.”
Ratcliffe also commented on the broader economic picture in the UK.
“I think you have to do some difficult things with the UK to get it back on track because, at the moment, I don’t think the economy is in a good [place].”
