Gary Neville says Manchester City ‘don’t like the idea’ that the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool aren’t welcoming what those at the Etihad have been doing during this past decade, as he told The Overlap.
The Manchester United defender was speaking about the numerous alleged financial breaches which Manchester City have been charged with by the Premier League.
As Neville mentioned, Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool are the ‘historic, traditional big clubs’ in English football.
Whilst those at the Etihad have been the dominant side of the past decade, they don’t have the rich trophy-laden history of those three sides.
In terms of size, no matter what they achieve out on the pitch, they will never surpass them.
But these latest allegations towards the current champions of England have certainly thrown a spanner amongst the works, with Neville sharing his thoughts.
“I think you overplay that (on fans wanting Man City to be guilty),” said Neville. “There has been massive respect from us to Man City over the last 7-8 years, in terms of what we have seen on the pitch.
“One, they are determined they haven’t done anything wrong. Number two, I don’t think they like the idea of the established elite not liking what they are doing. I think that’s how they feel at Man City.
“That the clubs at Man United, Liverpool and Arsenal. The sort of historic, traditional big clubs. Don’t like this idea of the newcomer coming on the block and basically doing what they are doing, so there is an element of that.
“They may use it in their favour, as a sort of siege mentality over the next few months.”

Of course, Man City now have every right to contest and respond to these charges, which, of course, have to be proven.
Some fans might want answers or verdicts pretty much straight away, but given that this could get messy, then that might not happen.
Either way, it’s not exactly a great look on English football when the Premier League has to go a the throat of one of their stakeholders following their latest accusations.
