Manchester United’s transfer plans for the summer are starting to become clear, and they may soon need to replace the departing defender.

Jarrad Branthwaite is being considered as a potential replacement for Harry Maguire, with the current club captain’s contract set to expire in June.

David Ornstein has told fans of the club that it could be a busy summer in terms of recruitment, with multiple signings expected across various positions.

The midfield appears to be a top priority, with reports indicating that at least two high-profile additions could be on the way. Casemiro’s departure has only increased the need for changes in that area.

The defence may also require attention, especially with Harry Maguire’s contract running down. One promising option has already been mentioned as a possible target.

If Maguire does leave, United would be one defender short in a season where European football and a deeper cup run are both on the cards.

Given Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt’s injury history, it’s no surprise the club is exploring defensive options, and Jacobo Ramon from Como has come into the frame.

Journalist Ben Jacobs has said that Ramon is a player United are keeping an eye on, especially if Maguire heads out.

“If Maguire goes, of course, Manchester United might be in the market for another young centre back, particularly a left-sided centre back, but much of these centre backs now are just as comfortable on the left or on the right.

“Like Tottenham and Chelsea, Jacobo Ramon is one name they quite like. He’s capable of playing on the right and on the left as well. But I think Real Madrid might utilise their buyback clause in the summer and pry him away from Como”

This season under Cesc Fabregas – who has been mentioned as a possible managerial option for United – Ramon has become an important figure at Como.

Ramon already proving stronger in the air than Maguire

Maguire has always been known for his dominance in the air, both defensively and going forward. Any replacement would need to bring a similar presence.

Ramon fits that profile, winning 3.2 aerial duels per game in Serie A this season – a number Maguire hasn’t reached since 2020/21.

Como are moving up the table, and Ramon is a big reason why. He won’t come cheap, but given his overall ability on both sides of the ball, it seems like an obvious move for any top club.

At just 21 years old, Ramon is already one of Europe’s most well-rounded young centre-backs. Even with Real Madrid’s likely interest, Ineos should be doing everything they can to get involved in the conversation.
