Manchester United have yet to make the move official, but Bryan Mbeumo’s arrival already has plenty of supporters and some high-profile ones at that.

Rather than headline signings, Manchester United are said to be focusing on deals that suit their new, more sustainable recruitment model – prioritising talent that fits roles rather than names that fill shirts.

An interesting aspect of the Mbeumo deal is the role of Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The INEOS chief, who also oversees Nice as part of his broader sports portfolio, played a part in recommending the forward.

With no release clause and strong competition, the move required patience and the kind of negotiation Manchester United haven’t always shown in recent years.

Mbeumo’s 20-goal season in the Premier League – paired with his versatility across the forward line – has made him one of the most in-demand talents. But United moved quietly and effectively, working through the player’s representatives and cementing support from their reshaped recruitment hierarchy.

Thomas Frank sees no ceiling on Mbeumo’s potential

When asked about comparisons between Mohamed Salah and Mbeumo, Thomas Frank said he didn’t see a ceiling in the Cameroonian striker’s development, only ‘huge potential’. He also described the number 19 as an “unbelievable player” later on.

“Bryan is the penalty taker, unbelievable at penalties, assists, work ethic, an unbelievable player”, stated the new Tottenham coach after Brentford’s 4-2 win over Brighton.

Amorim is said to have made Mbeumo a top target, viewing him as an ideal fit in his preferred 3-4-3 – not just for his finishing, but for his ability to link play and press from the front.

Mbeumo could be Manchester United’s best signing of the summer

Given Mbeumo’s goal return, age, versatility and growing reputation as a leader and model professional, there’s a strong case that he’s the signing that fits exactly what Manchester United have been lacking for years.

While Cunha’s signing addresses the need for unpredictability and closer-range finishing, the Brazilian still has question marks over his consistency and late blooming. Mbeumo, on the other hand, has followed a steady, upward path – from Ligue 2 to the Championship to the Premier League, consistently raising his level.

Mbeumo will know the expectation that comes with the badge – and Manchester United can feel confident the step won’t faze him. He should handle it all the better because he’s been playing for Brentford fans and Frank for five years – and that’s no easy crowd to win over either.
