Manchester United finally appear to have some long-term stability in defence, with the club’s focus this summer is expected to be on other areas of the pitch.

It wasn’t long ago that United faced the daunting prospect of needing to replace players across the entire starting XI. But that’s no longer the case in 2025, thanks in part to some well-timed additions and the emergence of young talent.

This summer, Ineos are planning further reinforcements for United, building on their 2024/25 squad overhaul – with attacking players as their first targets, as they believe the defensive system will naturally improve with Matthijs de Ligt playing a key role in that process.

Matthijs de Ligt – a high-profile signing from Bayern Munich before the previous season – is expected to play a crucial part in helping to steady what will be a youthful back line under new boss Ruben Amorim.

The Dutch centre-back may even be joined by 17-year-old Godwill Kukonki during the campaign. Kukonki is expected to push for more minutes as the season goes on and, based on what we’ve seen from him so far, he already looks like the real deal.

There’s also 19-year-old Leny Yoro, who is expected to become a regular starter after a first season of adaptation, which was affected by several injuries.

That depth means United can afford to focus on other priorities this summer, with De Ligt now trusted to anchor the defence for the foreseeable future.

De Ligt’s experience key to guiding Manchester United wonderkids

Standing between two teenagers, the former Bayern Munich star is expected to become the vocal leader Amorim needs in the heart of the defence.

Both players regularly featured for Amorim towards the end of last season.

While both still need plenty of guidance, they are hugely talented operators with enormous potential, and De Ligt’s experience will be critical as they continue their development into full-time first-team players.

Even Maguire, now 32, still has a role to play as an experienced presence and excellent communicator. If De Ligt can even model part of his leadership after Maguire, United’s back line will only become stronger.

The only drawback of the current setup is Victor Lindelof’s limited role. Yet even in a reduced capacity, the Swede can still be relied upon if injuries hit.

Whatever shape the defence takes, De Ligt’s steadying presence in the middle should give United fans reason to feel optimistic about the back line for the first time in years.
