Despite falling short in their pursuit of Carlos Baleba, Manchester United remain focused on adding a midfielder before the transfer window closes.
Ruben Amorim has managed to shift the mood around Old Trafford over the summer, even after an opening weekend defeat.
United put in a strong performance against Arsenal and probably deserved more from the match if not for some luck going the Gunners’ way.
Altay Bayindir was at fault for the loss, and Roy Keane did not hold back in his criticism of the keeper. Since then, there has been renewed talk about whether United need another goalkeeper.
The midfield is another area where United still seem to be looking for reinforcements.
Manchester United show interest in Atalanta’s Ederson

Even though Casemiro put in a strong shift against Arsenal, Manchester United still look short on energy in midfield over the course of a full season.
Brighton’s price tag for Carlos Baleba has made a deal unlikely. Meanwhile, Lucien Agoume is another name being considered, with an asking price of around £35m.
And now, according to Graeme Bailey speaking to United in Focus, Ederson from Atalanta is also in the frame, having come up during discussions about Rasmus Hojlund.
“Ederson is a fascinating player. Long linked with England almost every major club has looked at him and not just looked but liked what they have seen, but the situation has not been right,” Bailey said.
“Now Man United are looking, why wouldn’t Ederson be back on their radar – he could easily fill the CDM slot that Ruben Amorim clearly wants.
“I am told that there has been contact between Atalanta and United in the last few days, and the two clubs talked about a few different subjects.”
“One of them was Rasmus Hojlund. Atalanta were enquiring about what United are looking for, they need a striker and can offer Champions League football. Whilst it is believed AC Milan are Hojlund’s preference, a move back to Bergamo could very well appeal.
“So during these talks, I am informed that Ederson’s name did come up – United are doing their work on options.”
If United do end up making a move for Ederson this summer, it would signal serious intent. The Brazilian midfielder has been called “out of this world” by former manager Fabio Capello last year, as he continues to shine for the Italian side.
How Ineos could benefit from John Murtough’s situation
John Murtough, who previously served as Manchester United’s director of football, has taken up a new role in Bergamo, Italy, which could play into United’s hands.
He is now involved in discussions about Hojlund’s potential return to Serie A and the possibility of Ederson moving to Old Trafford.
Murtough was responsible for bringing the Dane to United for £64m in 2023. Now, Ineos might be able to turn those past decisions to their advantage.
A deal that works for both clubs seems within reach, and it will be up to Jason Wilcox to make sure it happens.
