Manchester United decided to hand Erik ten Hag a chance in April 2022 after Tottenham turned down his services.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Dutchman was pencilled in for an interview with Daniel Levy back in April 2021 as he signalled a willingness to leave Ajax for the Premier League.
However – according to the Daily Mail – Ten Hag did not impress Levy, as it was felt he didn’t have a strong enough grasp of the English language, nor did he have the charisma for the role.
Now, Manchester United are embarrassing Levy – who bizarrely ended up hiring Nuno Espirito Santo after interviewing Ten Hag.
What’s the story?
Well, as we approach the end of February, Ten Hag still has Manchester United fighting in all four competitions.
The Red Devils can win the Carabao Cup on Sunday 26th February if they overcome Newcastle at Wembley, while they also have a small chance of winning the Premier League as they sit five points behind Manchester City.

Manchester United are also in the fifth round of the FA Cup, and find themselves well placed to reach the Europa League Round of 16 following a 2-2 draw against Barcelona in the Round of 32 first leg.
Impressively, Ten Hag also has the Red Devils playing an exciting style of football, while plenty of charisma was shown to overturn a wretched start to the campaign, which involved a 4-0 defeat to Brentford.
While this is happening, Levy faces protests from the Tottenham fans against his ownership, with the future of Antonio Conte also far from certain as the Italian’s contract expires in June.
As things stand, Levy is presumably full of regret over his decision to ignore Ten Hag.
Manchester United rewarded for bravery Tottenham lacked
Of course, it can often be a risk to hire those succeeding over in the Netherlands.
Just look at Frank de Boer – one of the most successful managers in Ajax’s history – who ended up becoming the worst boss in the Premier League era having received the sack at Crystal Palace after four games, four defeats and zero goals.
However, Manchester United were brave, and saw enough in Ten Hag to give him a shot – that decision has well and truly paid off, with Tottenham now suffering for not showing similar faith in the Dutchman.
