Manchester City are reportedly already planning to make a move to sign Leicester City star James Maddison in the summer, with Newcastle United also chasing the England international.

According to the Daily Mail, Pep Guardiola has his sights set on a big summer of spending that will see the Manchester side add to their attacking ranks, with City already targeting a move for Maddison, who Leicester value at £60m.

With the attacking midfielder’s contract set to expire in 2024, the Foxes are keen to cash in on their star player and to avoid a situation they currently find themselves with in Youri Tielemans, who is set to leave Leicester at the end of this season as a free agent.

As per the report, City are targeting Maddison in an attempt to add more goals to the squad outside of Erling Haaland, who has been the focal point for Guardiola’s side this season in what is turning out to be a record-breaking year for the Norwegian attacking superstar.

Indeed, Maddison would be a good addition for City’s squad in the summer. However, as per Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle are also big admirers of the 26-year-old superstar, with the Magpies believing that they are the ‘perfect’ club for the England international.

With Newcastle now having the backing to make a transfer possible, there’s every chance that Maddison could become the centre of a transfer war between City and the Toon, and Guardiola’s side could find themselves on the losing side in the summer.

Newcastle’s quiet January transfer window could be a teaser that Eddie Howe’s side are ready to go big in the summer, and with Maddison guaranteed a first-team spot, the Magpies could be capable of beating City to the signing of the England star.

With the likes of Kalvin Phillips becoming nothing more than a bench warmer at City, Maddison could already be considering a move to Newcastle given how crucial the midfielder will be to the club’s future plans, with European football also there to sweeten any potential deal.
