Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell following the loan departure of Joao Cancelo to Bayern Munich.
According to the Daily Mail, the reigning Premier League champions could move in for the England international having allowed Cancelo to leave on loan, with City having a long-standing interest in Chilwell despite the defender’s recent injury problems.
As per the report, City were interested in signing Chilwell in the summer before moving on to Marc Cucurella and ultimately Sergio Gomez. However, with Cancelo leaving for Bayern, there’s now a chance that Pep Guardiola could go back in for the Chelsea star.
Lauded as ‘unbelievable’ by Slaven Bilic, Chilwell has spent the last two seasons at Chelsea largely sat on the treatment table, with the left-back not featuring for the Blues since late October, where a hamstring injury has kept the 26-year-old out of action and restricted to just 14 appearances in all competitions.
City signing Chilwell would make little sense despite Cancelo departure

Cancelo might have left City on loan, but with there being a slight chance that the 28-year-old will return to the senior fold in the summer, Guardiola spending big on deadline day to sign Chilwell makes little sense even with the Chelsea man being a long-term target.
As we know, City’s options at fullback are still sensational, with Nathan Ake flourishing in the left-back role in recent weeks and Rico Lewis looking like another star for the future. And for Chilwell, the defender will be first choice at Chelsea once he returns from his latest long-term injury. which supporters will be hoping is sooner rather than later.
