Tottenham could soon hire Luis Enrique as a replacement for Antonio Conte after the Spaniard admitted he would like to manage in the Premier League.

What’s the story?

Well, the 52-year-old is said to be an option for Daniel Levy as the 61-year-old aims to replace Conte.

Italian journalist Tony Damascelli told Calcio Mercato Web that Tottenham have already made contact with Enrique as they begin their search for a new manager.

The 74-year-old said: “I know that Luis Enrique has already been contacted, there is a good possibility that he will go to England.”

Now, Enrique himself has reinforced that claim from Damascelli.

Speaking to Cadena SER, the Gijon-born tactician said: “I would like to try an experience in Premier League, but I’d only accept an interesting project. I’d only join a club where I can do big, important things. I’ve received proposals from national teams. I keep all options open.”

Clearly, it sounds as if Enrique would be open to replacing Conte at Tottenham if Levy offers him a contract.

Luis Enrique would be a bad choice for Tottenham

In our view, Enrique and Spurs are a poor fit for each other.

The Spaniard usually adopts a possession based 4-3-3 system, a shape we feel Tottenham don’t really have the right players to utilise.

Enrique’s most recent match in management came when Spain tasted defeat to Morocco in the World Cup Round of 16, drawing 0-0 before suffering a 3-0 loss on penalties.

As WhoScored shows, Spain dominated possession with 77% of the ball and 1019 passes, but could only muster up one shot on target in 120 minutes of action.

In recent times, Enrique’s sides have shown a lack of directness and urgency, something that was evident under Conte as the likes of Heung-min Son’s talents on the counter attack were wasted.

If Levy does decide to hire Enrique, he will have to sign a number of players to fit into the new style, or we doubt Tottenham will enjoy much success.
