It took a week longer than it should have, but Bryson DeChambeau and Lucas Herbert are going head-to-head in the UK.
When DeChambeau walked off the 18th green after his second round of The Open Championship, this promised to be the final pairing on Saturday. DeChambeau was one shot off the leading Herbert, who had shot a 62 earlier in the day.
But DeChambeau’s two-shot penalty for improving his lie in the rough on the fifth hole knocked him down the order. He never got back in the mix, and Herbert wasn’t able to hold onto his lead over the weekend either.
Fast forward a week, and DeChambeau and Herbert are facing off again. They’re tied for the lead at LIV UK, played together on Friday, and will be grouped together once again to start the weekend.
Herbert broke down what it’s like to play alongside DeChambeau after his second round at the JCB Club.

DeChambeau had a massive following at The Open Championship, even after his controversial penalty during his second round. And judging by Herbert’s comments at LIV UK, they have followed him to the JCB Club.
The Australian said the two-time US Open winner has inspired him to play better golf this week: “It was great playing with Bryson today.
“You kind of expect him to either hit a good shot or make every putt, and it kind of keeps you on your own game, just keeps you that little bit sharp on your own game, a little bit better.

“I actually really enjoy it. I’m glad I’m playing with him again tomorrow. He’s had some great support out there.
“There’s a lot of fans out there watching our group, which was pretty awesome. It’s a privilege to have him out here on the Tour because he’s bringing a lot of eyeballs and a lot of fans, which we love doing around the world.”
DeChambeau is the heart and soul of LIV Golf at this point, as one of the most popular players in the sport. But that raises real concerns about the tour’s future.
Lucas Herbert’s comments highlight big problem for LIV Golf
DeChambeau’s immense popularity is a blessing and a curse for LIV. For the time being, it’s keeping the already limited interest in the tour alive. He’s a needle mover, and his presence alone brings eyeballs to LIV.
But DeChambeau is still out of contract next season. His negotiations with LIV have been an ongoing saga all year long, and despite there only being a few events left this year, the two-time US Open winner still hasn’t put pen to paper.
LIV Golf’s funding problems are likely a big reason for this. They’re still seeking new investment after the Saudi Public Investment Fund withdrew support for 2027 and beyond.
In the meantime, DeChambeau was seen meeting with PGA Tour officials at The Masters to discuss a potential return, and has also said he’s considering doing content creation full-time.
This is a major worry for LIV Golf, as they cannot afford to lose the crowd he’s attracted to LIV UK.
