Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Liverpool transfer target Conor Gallagher is ‘fighting for his future’ at Chelsea.

The Manchester United legend praised Conor Gallagher for scoring at the weekend as Frank Lampard secured his first win since returning to Chelsea when they beat Bournemouth.

Last season, the England international was loaned out to Crystal Palace, which helped earn him a spot at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar – that rise has seen the likes of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool being keen to sign him.

Without the ball, the 23-year-old suits Liverpool down to a tee because he is very aggressive, he gets the best out of those around him, he ensures the opposition suffocates when trying to play out from the back, he can chip in with goals and he covers more grass than anyone else.

It could be argued that he is a near-perfect Klopp player, but from Ferdinand’s perspective, Chelsea might not be his home for longer, as he told FIVE.

“He scored one goal, didn’t he?!” said Ferdinand. “He has done alright. Lovely header, to be fair to him.

“But he is fighting to stay at the club. I think he is fighting with a few other players there.

“Fighting to stay under this new ownership, a new manager comes in and I think he has a lot to do, like some of the others, to prove and to say ‘listen, I should be here next season’. A local lad who has come through the academy and I am sure he would love to stay there.”

LIVERPOOL WOULD BE A BRILLIANT MOVE FOR GALLAGHER

Yes, the Liverpool supporters are looking for that big-name signing, such as Jude Bellingham.

But they might just have to accept that might not happen, so those in the Anfield boardroom have to look elsewhere.

From Gallagher’s perspective, moving to Liverpool on the backdrop of the mess Chelsea are in, would be a wise move. Plus, those low-key signings Klopp has made over the years have always worked a treat.
