Jose Enrique has taken to Instagram to urge Liverpool to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong and thinks it is the “perfect time” to sign the Netherlands star – amid reports Barca have been told to reduce their wage bill by La Liga.

De Jong, 25, is now in his fourth season at Barcelona after joining the club from Ajax in the summer of 2019. Since his move to the Nou Camp, he has been first choice – clocking up 163 games. He has had a hand in 34 goals for Barcelona.

The Times claim that de Jong is a priority for Liverpool next summer, and is worth a fee of £65m. Liverpool do need a number of midfielders. Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner are all out of contract in the summer.

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo claim that Barcelona have been informed they they will need to reduce their yearly wage bill by €200million in the summer. Enrique reported the news on his Instagram page over the weekend.

The Reds need a midfielder. Liverpool are keen to sign Jude Bellingham but with Champions League football in doubt, you would expect that Bellingham may end up at Real Madrid or Manchester City. The Reds might not have the cash.

Especially, without Champions League football. Of course, de Jong was strongly linked with Manchester United in the summer. But United are unlikely to want de Jong now, with Casemiro on board. He is more affordable than Bellingham.

Enrique gave his take on the news that Barca will have to reduce their wage bill by a huge amount in the summer. They need to sell a number of stars. De Jong would help. Enrique reacted to his own post, urging the Reds to sign de Jong.
