Liverpool target Frenkie de Jong performed very well alongside Virgil van Dijk in the Group Stage of the World Cup.

The Netherlands international – who said he has a “feeling of safety” when playing with the Liverpool No.4 – is said to be a target for Jürgen Klopp in 2023, according to The Times.

Now, the German will surely be even more interested in De Jong.

What’s the story?

Well, the Liverpool target has now earned a place in the World Cup Team of the Group Stage.

WhoScored collated the best statistically performing XI of the Group Stage, which also featured Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro and other superstars.

De Jong scored one goal for the Netherlands as they won their first three games of the World Cup campaign.

The 25-year-old scored against Qatar after Cody Gakpo had put the Netherlands 1-0 up in their final game in Group A, which secured a 2-0 win for Louis van Gaal.

De Jong – who Barcelona paid £65m for – scored two goals and provided one assist in 13 La Liga appearances before jetting off to Qatar with the Netherlands.

Liverpool must sign Frenkie de Jong

In our view, De Jong is someone capable of transforming Liverpool’s ageing midfield department.

The Barcelona No.21 is al all-rounder in the middle of the park, who is equally as strong at tackling and intercepting as he is at driving up the pitch and getting involved in the attack.

Furthermore, it seems as if Liverpool have a fantastic chance to strike an agreement with Barcelona.

The Spanish giants are struggling financially, and the situation was made worse after they failed to qualify for the Champions League Round of 16.

According to The Athletic, Barcelona still owe Liverpool money for the signing of Philippe Coutinho, so perhaps the Reds could get themselves a discount on De Jong.
