Liverpool are now set to speak with the agents of Mateo Kovacic about a transfer for the Chelsea midfielder. The Stamford Bridge outfit are also prepared to let him leave.
That is according to 90min, which reports that Chelsea will not stop Kovacic from leaving in the summer. Blues chiefs are happy to sell any unsettled players and will give him the green light if the 28-year-old turns down a new deal. His current contract is due to expire in 2024.
Chelsea have so far made very little progress in their attempts to convince Kovacic to sign a new contract. So, his agents have now flown into England for crunch talks about the 93-cap star’s situation. They will also speak with several Premier League sides to see their interest.
Liverpool are now set to meet Chelsea star Kovacic’s agents
Kovacic’s agents are planning talks with Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool after the trio expressed an interest in the Chelsea star’s transfer. The sides each admire him as the Croatian has a wealth of experience in the Premier League, plus La Liga and Serie A.
He also won the Champions League three times with Real Madrid before joining Chelsea in 2018. The Blues initially hired Kovacic on loan before paying £40m to secure his permanent transfer. He would also later secure a fourth Champions League winners’ medal in 2020/21.
Kovacic has already offered his transfer to AC Milan
Kovacic intends to leave Chelsea at the end of the season rather than play on into the final year of his deal, per Pianeta Milan. It also reported in March 2023 that the midfielder met Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara. He was keen to offer his services to the Serie A squad.
The midfielder previously played at San Siro but for Inter Milan before joining Real Madrid in 2015. He spent two-and-a-half seasons with the Nerazzurri and now welcomes a return to Italy. But Liverpool will also soon put forward their case for Kovacic’s transfer from Chelsea.
Chelsea’s openness to Kovacic’s transfer could see further suitors emerge to rival Liverpool, though. He already has a number of admirers in the Premier League, including Declan Rice.
“He’s incredible,” the West Ham United captain told BT Sport in February 2022, via quotes by football.london. “I think you don’t really realise how good he is until you play against him and obviously when you watch him, you appreciate the footballer that he is.
“He can take the ball in tight areas. His dribbling ability is unbelievable, can find a pass, can control games and is fairly quick, as well. He’s always been a tough opponent.”
