Matthias Ginter expects he will still be a Borussia Monchengladbach player next season, via Kicker, despite attracting interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Barcelona.
The Germany international has addressed his future following Die Fohlen’s DFB Pokal first-round win over Kaiserslautern on Tuesday. Ginter played the full 90 minutes of the 1-0 win to begin the new season, after playing all 4,140 minutes of Gladbach’s 46 fixtures last term.
But Ginter has attracted a wealth of suitors this summer as his £54,000-per-week contract expires next year. Sky Germany report Real Madrid and Barcelona are considering moves, while Bild cited Liverpool and Tottenham as Premier League destinations for Ginter in May.
Barcelona and La Liga champions Atletico Madrid even contacted the Borussia-Park outfit to discuss his availability. Camp Nou chiefs want to refresh Ronald Koeman’s defence, but Diego Simeone has the deepest pockets among Spain’s big three.
Tottenham also made Borussia Monchengladbach an offer for Ginter, Bild claim, as the Bundesliga outfit would rather sell than let him see out his contract. But Die Fohlen will not sell the 27-year-old cheaply, with Sky Germany adding Bayer Leverkusen bid €20m (£17m).
Ginter has now, seemingly, conceded he will not be leaving Borussia Monchengladbach this summer. The 44-cap international has also admitted the North Rhine-Westphalia natives are yet to offer him a new contract, either.
“I’m going [to] firmly assume [I’m staying],” Ginter said. “[Gladbach Sporting Director] Max Eberl also explained quite well why I have not yet received an offer for an extension. We have Corona, it is difficult times for all clubs, and we will see accordingly.”
Liverpool and Tottenham could sign Ginter for free in 2022
Ginter admitting Borussia Monchengladbach are yet to offer him a new contract may offer Liverpool and Tottenham hope of a free transfer next summer. A player of his quality would be an absolute steal without a transfer fee, but would draw significant rival interest.
The Premier League duo could also tap into the lack of a new deal to negotiate reasonable terms with Gladbach. Die Fohlen are not against selling Ginter, after all, as long as a Liverpool or Tottenham presents a suitable offer.
Spurs are still in the market for another centre-back after landing Cristian Romero, too, per football.london. Managing Director Fabio Paratici has made defensive upgrades a priority, and landing Ginter from Borussia Monchengladbach would solve Tottenham’s needs.
