Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur wanted to sign Luis Diaz in the January transfer window and even made a bid, but it was Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool who signed him eventually.
And now, based on comments from Diaz on Liverpool’s official website, we can see that Tottenham did not really stand a chance against the Reds.
Diaz told Liverpool’s official website following his move from FC Porto: “Because it’s a club that I’ve followed for a good while now, and I’ve always watched them play.
“It’s no secret that the Premier League is one of the best leagues around and I’ve followed the football here and watched it since I was a boy.
“And as for Liverpool, I don’t think I need to say much about them that hasn’t been said. It’s a great club, a real reference in the game, which has won many cups and league titles, and so Liverpool has always been my choice.”
Liverpool paid an initial transfer fee of €40 million (£33.82 million) to Porto to secure the services of the 25-year-old Colombia international winger.

Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool for Luis Diaz
The Athletic reported this week that Tottenham had an agreement with Porto over Diaz after their bid was accepted and had even agreed terms with the Colombia international winger.
But then Liverpool reportedly swooped in and convinced Diaz to move to Anfield.
The Guardian reported last month that Tottenham’s initial bid for the 25-year-old winger was £37.6 million.
We do not find it surprising that Diaz choose Liverpool over Tottenham.
Yes, Tottenham are a big club who have a world-class manager in Antonio Conte.
However, Liverpool have won the Premier League and the Champions League under manager Jurgen Klopp in recent seasons and are in a better position to win major trophies than Spurs.
