According to The Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur came so close to signing Luis Diaz last month that they’d even signed an agreement with Porto over the transfer.
We’ve seen some incredible near misses in the past, but the fact that Spurs had actually put pen to paper on an agreement to sign Diaz just goes to show how close this deal was to completion.
Tottenham also had reportedly agreed personal terms with Diaz, and at that point, a deal was likely a matter of hours away from being completed.
Unfortunately for Spurs, the London club were gazumped at the last minute as Liverpool swooped in and completed the deal to land Diaz.
Spurs have missed out on a real star here. Diaz has already been described as ‘excellent’ by Ian Rush, but sadly, Tottenham couldn’t finalise this deal, despite coming so close.
Whether or not Spurs go on to regret this remains to be seen. Spurs did end up signing a new attacker in the shape of Dejan Kulusevski on Monday, but if Diaz outperforms the Swedish winger in the coming months, Spurs may well look back on this with some regret.
Sadly for Spurs, missing out on transfer targets is becoming something of a habit. They also missed out on Adama Traore this month after being linked for a long time, while moves for Bruno Fernandes and Willian in years gone by were also regretful near misses.
