Liverpool have suffered a blow to their interest in Jamal Musiala as the Germany ace wants to stay with Bayer Munich. But talks over a new contract for the World Cup star are slow.

That is according to Sky Germany, which reports Musiala is firm in his longing to stay at the Allianz Arena. The 19-year-old left Chelsea in 2019 for the record Bundesliga champions as a youth. He has since grown into a pivotal first-team player for Der FCB and for his country.

Musiala lit up a disappointing World Cup for Germany as Hansi Flick’s squad crashed out in the group stage. The 20-cap talent started all three of their Group E ties at Qatar 2022 and assisted Niclas Fullkrug against Spain. His 83rd-minute assist helped Germany draw 1-1.

Liverpool are interested in prising Musiala away from Bayern Munich

Qatar 2022 was just the latest stage for Musiala to show why Liverpool are interested in a move for the Bayern Munich gem. Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany recently noted that the Anfield natives are one of many top clubs tracking the former Southampton prospect.

But Musiala wants to stay in Bavaria, where he is already under contract through to 2026. Discussions are also ongoing between FCB and his agent over improving the midfielder’s terms. His current salary increases dynamically with the Stuttgart native’s rise at the club.

Currently, Sky Germany cites Musiala’s wage at €8m-a-year (£132k-a/w) including bonuses but talks over an improved contract are still premature. Bayern Munich are not in a rush to get him to agree to fresh terms. The topic of his salary is also the only key stumbling block.

Once Bayern Munich and Musiala’s camp sit down to thrash out a new contract to thwart interest from clubs like Liverpool, the discussions will come down to the terms presented. Talks will also ramp up once the midfielder returns to Bavaria following his World Cup exit.

Musiala has a while to wait to continue his club campaign after the World Cup

The Bundesliga does not resume until January 20, 2023, following the German top-flight’s traditional winter break. Bayern Munich feature in the first post-World Cup game away to RB Leipzig. Julian Nagelsmann will, no doubt, hope to see Musiala return free from injury.

Bayern Munich have now lost goalkeeper and captain Manuel Neuer for the remainder of the campaign after he underwent surgery. The 36-year-old fractured his lower right leg in a skiing incident this Friday. Neuer was enjoying time off after Germany’s poor World Cup.

Musiala will be key to Bayern Munich overcoming their captain’s absence as they defend a 10th successive Bundesliga title. The teenager – who Thomas Muller calls ‘magic’ – has 12 goals and 10 assists in 22 games this season, with nine and seven in the 14 league outings.
