It was a sad to see Joe Gomez hobble offer just before half-time as Liverpool came from behind to beat Southampton. With two must-win games on the horizon, even if Gomez returns, has he played his last game for the Reds?

Prior to his second anterior cruciate ligament injury, 24-year-old Gomez had established himself as the permanent partner alongside Virgil van Dijk. He was ahead of Joel Matip in the pecking order. Now, he is fourth choice.

Matip seems to get better with age and the signing of Ibrahima Konate has been a master stroke by Liverpool. Gomez is currently getting more game time as cover for Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, than centre-back.

His latest injury was another blow for the ex-Charlton defender. Jurgen Klopp spoke after the match, stating Gomez was in a good mood despite the issue. But is it the England international’s last ever game for Liverpool?

Has Gomez played last game for Liverpool? It should be, for him…

Gomez, who is rated at £23million (Express), is a transfer target for Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa this summer. Villa need a centre-back and cover on the right, and Gomez fits the bill. The Gerrard connection also helps.

The World Cup is coming at the end of the year and if Gomez stands any chance of making Gareth Southgate’s squad, he needs to be playing. Staying at Anfield ends any chance of Gomez pulling on an England shirt in Qatar.

Liverpool face Wolves this weekend, and then Real Madrid in the Champions League final. Two pivotal games in which Liverpool must win to stand any chance of keeping their quadruple hopes alive this season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, barring any injury, will start both. Gomez will be on the bench and the chances are, he will remain an unused sub – if he is fit. So, injury or not, it seems as if Gomez has played his last game for the Reds.
