Rio Ferdinand has said that based on this season, Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has been better than Liverpool defender Andy Robertson.

Considering Robertson has been widely regarded as the best left-back in world football for a number of years, this may be considered as a hot take.

But on the other hand, there is no denying how well Shaw has performed this campaign.

Going by that logic, it seems Rio Ferdinand believes that Luke Shaw pips Andy Robertson if pitted against each other.

The £160,000-a-week Scot recently reminded the world of his class against Manchester United of all teams, leaving Alan Shearer, Glenn Hoddle, Ben Foster and Garth Crooks stunned.

But on the whole, Andy Robertson has perhaps not been as consistent as Luke Shaw this season, which is why Rio Ferdinand sided with the latter on the FIVE YouTube channel.

“I’m going [Luke] Shaw. But if you’d have asked me a year ago or beyond, I’d have said [Andy] Robertson for the last three or four years. But this season, I’d play Shaw before Robertson.”

Rio Ferdinand ultimately makes a fair point

All in all, there is no debating the fact that the former Hull City defender is in a different league to the £30 million (Sky Sports) man.

But as Rio Ferdinand said, just based on the ongoing campaign, Luke Shaw has most certainly been better than Andy Robertson.

The latter has not been the incredible attacking threat he usually is, which may potentially be due to Sadio Mane’s departure, as he is yet to strike as strong a connection with Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez on the left flank.

The same cannot be said for the England international, who is perhaps in conversation with Oleksandr Zinchenko as the division’s most in-form left-back.
