Josko Gvardiol is a name that has been making waves in the football world lately, with the RB Leipzig centre-back being linked with a move to several top clubs. One club that should take a closer look at the Croatian international is Liverpool.

According to Rudy Galetti, there are more and more indications that Liverpool are going to push for the World Cup star, and this is a move that could be done. After all, the Croatian has named the Reds as his dream club in the past.

For all the talk of a midfield revamp at Anfield, a defensive shake-up may also be in the offing. Virgil van Dijk is, once again, suffering with injuries, Joe Gomez has struggled for form for the past three years and Joel Matip could be set to leave in the summer.

Enter Gvardiol. At just 21 years old, Gvardiol has already impressed in the Bundesliga and at the World Cup, being described as one of the best in the world in his position despite his young age. He is strong, athletic and a confident ball-player, making him the perfect partner for Ibrahima Konate, Liverpool’s other long-term centre-back option.

Like Konate, has honed his craft in the Red Bull system, which is known for its focus on high-pressing and an aggressive style of play.

This shared background could make their understanding of each other’s game much smoother, as they are already used to similar tactics and styles. With their pace and strength, they would form a formidable partnership in defence that should be able to click with ease.

Gvardiol’s left-footedness would also balance out the backline, giving Liverpool a more natural route for distribution from the back, while Konate can do a similar job with his right.

The young Croatian has shown he can handle the pressure of playing for a big club, performing consistently for RB Leipzig, while he also barely put a foot wrong as Croatia finished third at the World Cup.

Of course, being the long-term replacement for Van Dijk in this Liverpool team is an unenviable task. After all, the Dutchman is probably the Reds’ best defender ever, but if there’s anyone in world football who’s up to the challenge, it may well be Gvardiol.
